The Maldives is a chain of 1,192 coral islands grouped into 26 atolls, stretching 800 kilometres north to south across the Indian Ocean. Just over 200 islands are inhabited, and each resort occupies an island of its own.

There are no mountains and no rivers — only white sand, palm trees and a lagoon so clear the reef is visible from the shore. Temperatures hover around 30°C all year, and the surrounding waters hold manta rays, whale sharks and some of the richest coral reefs on earth.

Maldivian culture is shaped by centuries of trade between Arabia, India and the Far East, with Dhivehi as the national language, Islam as the state religion, and fishing — tuna in particular — at the heart of island life. Visitors receive a 30-day free visa on arrival.
